Washington, DC
(July 16, 2010) - The funding level for the NIH approved by the House Labor-HHS-Education Appropriations Subcommittee represents a step in the right direction for the 81 million adults in the United States suffering from heart disease, stroke and other forms of cardiovascular disease, America’s No. 1 and most costly killer. Yet, more is needed to help all Americans live longer, healthier and productive lives. The American Heart Association will continue to work with the Senate to secure enhanced funding for the NIH to capitalize on momentum achieved under the Recovery Act to spur economic growth and innovation, advance science, and improve the health of all Americans. Stable and sustained funding remains our best hope to prevent and cure heart disease and stroke. NIH remains our best opportunity to jumpstart the pace of scientific discovery and an economic growth engine that provides good paying jobs in every state.
